Pediatric Physical Therapy in Colorado

Physical Therapy for ChildrenPediatric physical therapy assists in early detection of health problems and use a wide variety of modalities to treat disorders in the pediatric population. These therapists are specialized in diagnosis, treatment and management of infants, children, and adolescents with a variety of congenital, developmental, neuromuscular, skeletal, or acquired disorders/diseases.

Pediatric physical therapy focuses on improving many skills in children, including:

  • Motor Skills
  • Balance and Coordination
  • Strength and Endurance
  • Cognitive and Sensory

Children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and torticollis may benefit from pediatric physical therapy. We are able to alleviate impairments and functional limitations through therapeutic treatments such as exercise, manual therapy, assistive and adaptive devices, functional training, neuro-muscular re-education, splinting, and parent education.

What does pediatric physical therapy accomplish?

Children’s physical therapy prevents injury, impairments, and functional limitations by promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles. In addition to assessing a range of motion, strength, posture, and gait, children’s physical therapy will also assess:

  • Motor planning: how your child accomplishes a given task
  • The sensory system: how your child interprets and responds to data.

This focus enhances the gross motor function of your child and promotes independence and safety at home and in the community.

What Does Pediatric Physical Therapy Evaluate?

imageA physical therapist will examine and evaluate a child to determine a diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention needed. Through standardized testing, we are able to determine a child’s level of physical development and determine if a delay exists. We evaluate the development of a child’s musculoskeletal function, gait, posture, reflexes, and gross motor, and sensory-motor skills while assessing the need for lower extremity orthotics, ambulation devices, or adaptive seating.

Keep in mind as children grow and develop, some difficulties can be expected and are considered a normal part of development.
